Partial dentures are a great option for some patients who have missing teeth. There are different types of partial dentures available. When you visit our denture clinic in Toronto, our denturists will talk about which choices are appropriate, as well as listen to your wants and concerns. Together, we can decide which style of partial will meet your individual needs and budget.
Here are some types of partial dentures you may want to consider.
Metal Cast Framework Partials
These are the Cadillac of partials, working best for people with several missing teeth. This style of appliance consists of a custom fitted metal base that wraps across the length of the arch on the inside of your mouth. The framework is not seen when you talk, but it’s highly effective for providing a durable, long lasting prosthetic. Premium pontic (false) teeth are attached to compliment the adjacent, natural ones. Metal clasps or hooks are used to hug the neighboring teeth, holding the partial securely in place.
Another great feature of a cast partial is that it can have more teeth added to it later on. So, in the future, if you’re faced with having another tooth removed – there’s no need to invest in a new partial. We can use the one you currently have and just add a tooth to it. Our denture clinic in Toronto has an on-site lab and we can perform repairs while you wait in our comfortable reception area.
Acrylic Partials
Acrylic partials are a great economical way of replacing a few missing teeth. This appliance has an acrylic base with an appropriate number of pontic teeth attached to them. Some clasps (made of either acrylic or metal, depending on the style) are used to wrap around the present teeth and hold the partial in place.
Flippers
This is a type of partial that is usually used as a temporary prosthesis while replacing a tooth as you’re undergoing a more permanent treatment (like dental implant placement.) Flippers are the least expensive appliance as they don’t have a metal base or clasps. They’re strictly made from acrylic and fit in place like a retainer. Wearing and eating with a flipper can be a bit difficult. Try using denture adhesive to help hold it in place, but keep in mind it’s only designed to get you by as you wait on a more permanent alternative.
Adjusting to Your New Partial
Acrylic and metal don’t budge. Slight discrepancies between the partial and your gum tissue can cause sore places to develop within your mouth. This is common with any new partial and most people will experience slight discomfort as they get accustomed to wearing it. But if sore spots persist and the partial is not adjusted, it won’t get better. In fact, it’ll get worse. Painful ulcers can begin to develop from the pressure spots brought on by your new prosthesis. So it’s important that you come back and visit us at Dentures Direct Implant Denture Clinic in Toronto where we will gladly tweak any problem areas on the partial to help make you comfortable.
Adjustments are made little by little in an effort to avoid compromising the overall secure fit of the partial. So, it may be that you have to return to our clinic a time or two before your gums and partial are happily married together.
How to Fix Loose Partials
At times you may start to notice that your partial is becoming looser than it once was. Eating with a removable denture can be very difficult if it won’t stop moving. There are a couple of reasons that could be causing the issue, so a quick assessment will be needed.
The more times we slip our partial in and out of our mouths, the more the clasps flex. If this is the reason your partial has become loose, then there’s a simple fix. Just come in to see our denturists in Toronto and we’ll be able to correct them. We have special tools and an in-house lab where we can tighten the clasps for you. We don’t recommend you try to do any of this at home on your own since you could permanently damage or break the clasps.
If you’ve had teeth pulled, your gums will begin to shrink as they heal. Also, as one age, the same thing occurs. Since partials are such a precise fit as to what your gums are shaped like at the time they’re being made – any change in their form will affect their fit. So, if you had teeth pulled right before you got your partial – or if you’ve had your partial for a long time – then you should visit our denture clinic in Toronto to have it evaluated.
In most cases, we can reline the inside of a partial with new acrylic which is molded to the new shape of your mouth. This is a quick and easy procedure that prevents the need for a replacement. Having a reline done can make your partial feel almost new again. So, it’s possible that we’ll need to adjust it in the first few weeks for a comfortable fit.
Denture adhesive is available in many forms and can also be used to help hold a partial in place. You can purchase adhesive strips, powder, or a paste. All options are affordable and everyone has their own personal preference. Experiment with over the counter products to find the one that works best for you.
