Permanent Dentures Toronto

Unless you already have dentures, you probably don’t think much about them. But if your teeth are painful, damaged, or missing, you might just wish the problem would go away. At Dentures Direct, we see many patients who are ashamed of the state of their teeth and don’t even want to think about the “D” word because of the negative connotations. Probably the image that comes to mind is that of the slippery, obviously false set of teeth falling out from grandpa’s mouth into his soup!

We’ve come a long way in the world of cosmetic dentistry. Now, patients can choose from a range of solutions, including permanent dentures.

What are Permanent Dentures?

There are many types or even definitions of what constitutes a ‘permanent’ denture, but generally we are referring to teeth that are fixed in the mouth by means of dental implants. Unlike false teeth that are just held in place by the remaining natural teeth or via suction, fixed teeth are held in place more or less permanently by screws that attach them to titanium posts surgically implanted in the jaw. This type of dental implant technique can be used to replace one, a few, or even all of a patient’s teeth.

If a patient has no natural teeth, they might be able to choose numerous implants to hold their new teeth individually in place, but this can be problematic as often there is deterioration of the jaw bone and the remaining bone cannot withstand so many surgically implanted posts.

Another alternative is to use just a few implants which can hold a removable plate in place. This is known as the “All-on-4” technique and has met with great success among denturists and their patients everywhere. While these teeth can be taken out, they are held tightly in place inside the mouth and do not move around, which means you can chew any type of food without soreness or worrying about the dentures slipping.

Advantages of Permanent Dentures

Permanent dentures are much more stable than dentures held on by suction or by surrounding teeth, so wearers can live their daily lives with confidence, not worrying that their laugh, smile or diet will compromise their teeth and cause embarrassment and pain. Of course, surgery is involved, which entails several visits to the clinic and a definite healing period, and the cost of denture implants may not be covered by one’s dental insurance plan. Still, many patients find that the long-lasting benefits and convenience of permanent dentures outweigh the cost and downtime of surgery.

Cost of Permanent Dentures

Because permanent dentures are available in so many forms – from full dentures to partials – the cost largely depends on the extent of the dental work you will need, and what type of permanent dental bridges or implants you are getting. If your existing teeth are decayed, for example, extra dental work or extractions may also need to be carried out. Or you might just need a single tooth replaced. Some dental plans do cover some or all of the work; to help our patients fill in those gaps, Dentures Direct offers convenient payment plans to make permanent dentures more affordable for most patients.

While the implant retained denture itself will have to be replaced periodically, the screws are designed to last a lifetime, so the recurring costs are not unmanageable.

The best way to find out if permanent dentures are right for you, is to book a consultation with one of our denturists. We’ll help you find the most effective treatments that will work with your particular situation and lifestyle. And we’ll help you determine whether comfortable, natural-looking permanent dentures would be right for you.
